Top Reasons why you should be using Lawn Sand

As summertime approaches, gardeners on the quest for a greener lawn will currently be looking for helpful products and fertilisers. Whilst there are many lawn care products that can help you achieve the lawn you desire, lawn sand is ideal for using on your grass right now in April, through to September.

A mixture of iron sulphate, ammonium sulphate, and fine sand, application of lawn sand can help your lawn gain that more even green coverage you desire, and help reduce the amount of surface weeds. Here are three reasons why budding gardeners should use lawn sand to preserve and create a healthy lawn.

1-      Helps Control Existing Moss

Lawn imperfections, such as moss or weeds, can be reduced by the application of lawn sand. The iron sulphate in the lawn sand will deter existing moss that is visible on your lawn, and help reduce any unwanted weeds. Although it kills some existing moss, it won’t get rid of a persistent moss problem. In cases of persistent moss, you may want to try applying Lawn Feed, Weed and Moss Killer.

2-      Creates a Greener Lawn

The ammonium sulphate content is a fertiliser that releases a high level of nitrogen. This release of nitrogen will help make your lawn grass greener. Combined with the iron sulphate, which helps eradicate surface moss and weeds, and the fine sand that helps with the even distribution of the chemicals, the spreading of lawn sand can help your lawn and garden grass appear less patchy, and gain a much more even grass coverage.

3-      Can be Used Regularly

Lawn sand works best when applied to your grass every 4-6 weeks over the late spring and throughout the summer. This regular use allows for surface moss and weeds to be slowly eradicated, and for the production of a healthy lawn. Gardeners should be careful though not to overuse the product, as to quote Shakespeare, ‘Can one desire too much of a good thing’, meaning excess or any one good thing may do some harm.

When applying lawn sand, make sure that you do so during a dry spell, or a day or two before rain is forecast. If there is no rainfall a few days after application, then generously water your lawn to help the nutrients from the lawn sand settle and begin to work.
